Our latest project is to send some of our local men to Jinja to learn farming skills so that we can grow our own food source to feed the children substantial food so that we might improve the health of our children.
Our on going project for 2008 is to continue to build our purpose built kitchen to cater for the children but also to create jobs, people will use the facilities of the school for cooking products that can be sold in the local town.
We were delighted this year to be the first charity to be awarded the QIS certificate (quality improvements system) this is an award given by viva network and crane a Dutch company working in Uganda.
The award is given to charity’s that have a child protection policy in place and are continually making improvements in the work we do, this is closely monitored and guidelines have to be adhered to, we continue to work with both Crane and Viva and are always looking for ways to improve the facilities and care for our children and those we employ.
In April 2008 we were delighted to be able to bring solar power to our land ready for evening classes for our adult learning project and also to light our teachers accommodation.
Our teachers are fortunate to have a house to live in when they are employed by House of Joy these houses are built by the school helping the whole area to become secure at night.
We now have 22 acres of land we have many projects planned for this land but our hope is to make this land self sufficient.
We work very closely with House of Joy Uganda and are always careful to maintain the wonderful culture they have, although they are constantly asking us to teach them western ways.
Our aim is to continue to improve our facilities for the children we would like to build terraced type houses for our children who have become orphaned, we will employ and train house mothers and house fathers to look after4 /6 children who can live together as a family.
We would like to open a small clinic to treat minor illnesses for our children and the 80 local Villages we serve at House of Joy. We will need to employ a nurse to manage this for us.
In the future we would like to build a secondary school and offer our children the ability to achieve academically or through vocational programmes.
We are hoping to make projects available to widows. The widows of our village are very talented at making African crafts we are hoping to find an outlet for these so that the widows are able to make a living for themselves.
